Subject: Romanian newspaper editorial

We rarely get a chance to see another country's editorial about us, the USA.

Editorial from Romanian Newspaper: When you think the US isn't thought well of all over the world, read this editorial from a Romanian Newspaper.

~An Ode to America~

Why are Americans so united? They don't resemble one another even if you paint them! They speak all the languages of the world and form an astonishing mixture of civilizations. Some of them are nearly extinct, others are incompatible with one another, and in matters of religious beliefs, not even God can count how many they are.

Still, the American tragedy turned three hundred million people into a hand put on the heart. Nobody rushed to accuse the White House, the army, the secret services that they are only a bunch of losers. Nobody rushed to empty their bank accounts. Nobody rushed on the streets nearby to gape about.

The Americans volunteered to donate blood and to give a helping hand. After the first moments of panic, they raised the flag on the smoking ruins, putting on T-shirts, caps and ties in the colors of the national flag.

They placed flags on buildings and cars as if in every place and on every car a minister or the president was passing. On every occasion they started singing their traditional song: "God Bless America".

Silent as a rock, I watched the charity concert broadcast on Saturday once, twice, three times, on different TV channels. There were Clint Eastwood,Willie Nelson, Robert de Niro, Julia Roberts, Cassius Clay, Jack Nicholson, Bruce Springsteen, Sylvester Stalone, James Wood, and many others whom no film or producers could ever bring together. The American's solidarity spirit turned them into a choir. Actually, choir is not the word. What you could hear was the heavy artillery of the American soul.

What neither George W. Bush, nor Bill Clinton, nor Colin Powell could say without facing the risk of stumbling over words and sounds, was being heard in a great and unmistakable way in this charity concert.

I don't know how it happened that all this obsessive singing of America didn't sound croaky, nationalist, or ostentatious! It made you green with envy because you weren't able to sing for your country without running the risk of being considered chauvinist, ridiculous, or suspected of who-knows-what mean interests.

I watched the live broadcast and the rerun of its rerun for hours listening to the story of the guy who went down one hundred floors with a woman in a wheelchair without knowing who she was, or of the Californian hockey player, who fought with the terrorists and prevented the plane from hitting a target that would have killed other hundreds or thousands of people.

How on earth were they able to bow before a fellow human? Imperceptibly, with every word and musical note, the memory of some turned into a modern myth of tragic heroes. And with every phone call, millions and millions of dollars were put in a collection aimed at rewarding not a man or a family, but a spirit which nothing can buy.

What on earth can unite the Americans in such a way? Their land? Their galloping history? Their economic power? Money? I tried for hours to find an answer, humming songs and murmuring murmuring phrases which risk of sounding like common places.

I thought things over, but I reached only one conclusion. Only freedom can work such miracles

LIBERTY

"This war will not be short, pleasant, or easy. It has already required the sacrifice of our firefighters, our policemen, our soldiers, our Sailors, our airmen, and our Marines. More sacrifices will be made. In the end we will win, precisely because we are those things that the terrorists hate -- prosperous, happy, tolerant, and most of all, free. Those Americans who wish they could be here with us are, in fact, here with us in spirit. Never before in American history has our nation been so completely unified and resolute in purpose. They are cheering us on, praying for our safety and our success. Our families are behind us 100%. We will not let them down. We are, and will be, men and women of honor, courage, and commitment. Abraham Lincoln said 'America is the last, best hope for the world'. Tonight we hold a shining beacon of that hope. We shall keep it burning brightly. Stay sharp. Stay focused. Stay safe. Use the training that has made you the best Sailors in the world. Trust in your faith, and in your shipmates. God bless us all, and God bless America."

Subject: [B2K] A Reminder (Jan. 3, 2002)

May we never forget those who gave their lives on 9-11 and may we keep reminding those politicians who have forgotten that the American people will help them remember.

The Associated Press

NEW YORK (January 2, 2002 9:18 p.m. EST) - Excavation crews opened up the lobby of one of the collapsed towers, pulling the bodies of 10 firefighters and three civilians from the rubble of the World Trade Center, a firefighters union spokesman said Wednesday.

"Those lower floors are now 30 feet below ground," said Tom Da Parma of the Uniformed Firefighters Association. He said the building's steel beams collapsed in such a way that pockets were created, and that is where many of the bodies have been found. None of the 13 bodies, all discovered Tuesday, had been identified Wednesday morning.

Da Parma said the excavation of the disaster site is bringing workers to an area of the lobby where many people were trapped when the twin towers collapsed on Sept. 11. "A lot of firefighters just would not leave that area while people were still trying to get out," he said. Da Parma estimated that the bodies of 130 of the 343 firefighters missing in the terrorist attack had been identified.

The discovery comes amid reports that the Fire Department is prohibiting firefighters from leaving their companies to go to the site and carry away their fallen comrades. The ban seeks to maintain order at the site, as well as provide protection in communities around the city.

Da Parma said the union is talking with department officials about the policy. Fire Department spokesman Francis X. Gribbon did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

At the disaster site, two large demolition cranes are scheduled to be dismantled this week, the Daily News reported Wednesday. Six smaller cranes and cherry pickers are expected to remain.

More than half of the 1.2 million tons of debris has been cleared.

America Nevers Ends

America will never die, Freedom is not an idea it is a fact. Those who try and take on America are fools, they don't just take on our Govt they take on every American. USA all the way!!!!!!!

I am a very strong, positive American. This last week has caused unsettling, anger, and worry. President Bush's speech concreted hopeful anticipation for decisive, thoughtful elimination of world terrorism. Even the strong and focused benefited from this now.

CNN this morning reduced his superb delivery of eagerly awaited leadership to by-lines under visual stories of peripheral news items....interspersed with continued visuals of the destruction of New York and the Pentagon.

CNN is undermining confidence so sorely needed now. Please ask for listener response to CNN for this travesty. Sour grapes should dissolve in the face of national need....or are they incapable of camouflaging even now, their true agenda.

I am so proud of our president---he has received an A+ in my book, thank you Bush! Shame on Jennings and Maher and others!

I wish Peter Jennings (ABC), Bill Maher (ABC) Dan Rather (CBS) and Tom Brokaw would all GET FIRED and clear their desks -- they are poison to our ears.I am extremely tired of listening to lies these idiots spew with their own personal and bias opinions. The American people have tolerated these liberal nuts for TOO TOO long and the nation is more divided than ever(thanks to Bill Clinton and his corrupt administration!). Democrats have killed the US and I vow to choose the moderate republican ticket from now on.

Patriotism-

I am appalled that people are ashamed to show that they are patriotic. Aren't you an American every minute of everyday? Don't you enjoy the freedoms and rewards of living in a free democratic society every minute of every day of your life? Why is it that people can only wear a red, white, and blue ribbon, or display Our Flag for one or two days, and hold a candle in a ceremony once and then pass by the practice? I will wear my ribbon with pride for as long as it takes to support those people who serve us in any capacity to keep as safe and free. I will light a candle every night in memory of this of those lost, and those who will follow to preserve our American way of life.

I can tell you that in Massachusetts more people than not do not exhibit a patriotic pride for their country. You see more pick-up trucks with American Flags, or messages of support on them than any other vehicle. Too bad those driving all those other expensive imports can't trouble themselves to place the Flag on their vehicle. They profited from our free economy well enough to drive the most expensive vehicles on the road, but won't display anything on their showpieces.

Don't whine about not being able to find a flag, you should have owned one in the first place. Anyone can print a paper copy off the internet, it only takes a little time and effort. Maybe that is part of the problem, you are too removed from the effort of caring and showing it. Some towns to their credit have Our American Flag hanging at almost every residence, but they are the exception rather than the rule. One man painted an American Flag on the entire side of his panel truck.

Don't be a lazy American, take the time to care, and show it. Teach your children what the symbol of our country means in our common American history. Yes we must move forward with our lives, but we should never forget what our freedom means to us and much of the rest of the world. Thank-you, and God Bless America!

Sincerely, Sarah

1) I can't believe Annie Lebovitz has the verve to say she doesn't like Bush because of his "euphemisms" and folksy manner. I don't really care if Bush isn't the greatest communicator. Bill Clinton may be a better communicator, but all he ever did is talk, well that, and screw around a lot!

I'd rather have someone in office that will tackle the problem head on rather than drop a bomb on an aspirin factory and forget about following through.

2) Once we track down the money sources for the terrorist groups, and or governments responsible, is there any way that the U.S. insurance carriers for the WTC buildings, the victims families and the government (for the Pentagon) can stake restitution claims against these funds? If so, we could clean them out, as the damages would more than likely far exceed the amounts of their holdings?

Subject: NCCI Changes Position, Gives Employees American Flags

Thank you for your concern. Please read the attached press release. NCCI Changes Position, Gives Employees American Flags

NCCI Changes Position, Gives Employees American Flags

(Boca Raton, FL) NCCI Holdings, Inc., today announced that it has changed its position on flags in its workplace and offered employees American flags and red-white-and-blue lapel ribbons as they entered the workplace this morning.

President & CEO Bill Schrempf said he was meeting with employees this morning to explain the company's change and apologize for not permitting them to display the American flag on Friday during the National Day of Prayer and Remembrance.

In announcing the change, Schrempf indicated that NCCI's senior management team met over the weekend and decided to reverse the company's longstanding position, which had been intended to protect employees.

This morning, the company took the following actions concerning the display of the American flag by its employees:

1. Any interested employee can display an American flag on their desktop. Flags will be provided for this purpose, if employees would like to have one to display.
2.Red, white & blue lapel remembrance ribbons are being provided for those who want to wear them.

I am sooo thankful that our modern artists were not watching the night that Francis Scott Key penned our country's National Anthem. Whoa , were we spared. I'm afraid it would have consisted of one possibly two lines of nothing but drivel. Next to the great Amazing Grace that has been in the fore front of late, our artists revealed their total lack of Holy Spirit, hence their immense lack of creativity. As an aside please tell Tom Hanks that I am not teaching my children his version of the pledge of Allegiance -"...one nation indivisible..." We still use that three letter word here .."one nation under God, indivisible..." Dan Rather used the devoid version too just before the special began. Too bad-so sad.Where on earth do they think that Amazing Grace comes from ?????? Love to you and yours,

Barbara / WA 98003

This my first attempt at communicating with you although I have been listening to your show several hours a week for many years.I very often do not agree with you but I love the way you deliver your point of view. I and many other Canadians were deeply hurt that the president made no mention of our country and the help and support we gave.

We were the very first country to render any form of direct assistance to the USA. Within a few hours of the attack we allowed into our air space and accepted dozens of American aircraft at our airports putting aside the thought that one of these could also be a flying bomb.We housed and fed thousands of American passengers and crew because we cared. We did not wait for the government or media to tell us to give blood or send in volunteers or pray.

However, no matter the snub we felt, we would do it again because you are our friends. I having lived in the USA for a number of years and I am quite aware that too many Americans do not even know where Canada is.
Milton / Canada

PS. This was the best speech I have heard from George W.

* * *

My husband is a Northwest airline pilot. He has worked for the company for over 23 years. He is simply amazed at the lengths airport security is taking to assure passengers of their safety. I say this factiously- he has had his nail clippers and mustache scissors taken away. Today when leaving New York City he had his razor blades taken away. Much to his dismay, they would not budge on the removal of the razor blades. But, have now fear, once he had passed through security, he ran straight to the gift shop and bought some more? Go figure? He even could have bought a replica of the Empire State building with a very sharp and protruding end on it? How absurd can we get?

I may be naive, but is there a level of terrorism? Is the terrorism that is prevalent in Northern Ireland really terrorism? Is the level in the region of the Bosnians considered terrorism, or some form of gorilla warfare? Is there a definition?

Also, did you know that the Canadian government does not have laws on their books that discourage the terrorists in that country to operate, and often flourish undisturbed. The fact that operatives were aware to the RCMP in places like Toronto and St. Johns, Nova Scotia (where one of the terrorists came from on one of the ferries to Maine) should wake the United State's indignation to push the ....Canadians.... to "pull the rag out" of their collective asses and contribute rather than let U.S. take care of the free-loaders.

A friend asked me recently why people in a minority seemed to get their own way. She was referring to the fact that the flag is not flown because it might offend someone and the Pledge of Allegiance is not said in some PUBLIC schools for the same reason. My first response was the first thought that came to my mind "Because we allow it." When I was growing up, my mother taught us to sit down and shut up. If you don't care about the National Anthem being played at a ball game just sit down and shut up. Nope, you make crude remarks or whine and soon we're not doing that anymore. We have the American Civil Liberties Union looking after the civil liberties of people in prison at what cost to the civil liberties of the honest law abiding citizens. The organization for women is looking after the rights of women. Which women? I am a women who has worked in the clerical field for over 20 years and I can't tell you one thing they did for me. These people threaten to sue and raise a fuss and we just sit by and say "oh well".

If these terrorist have indeed lived amongst us and witnessed us standing by while all of this is happening no wonder they thought we would turn into victims. We can shout "throw out the immigrants" until the cows come home and point our fingers but we must remember that it was our silence that allowed an atheist to go to Washington and have prayer removed from the schools. Just like our silence allows people to say "You can't fly the AMERICAN flag in America because it might offend someone.

It is time for every person in this country no matter their ethnic background or skin color to teach their children that none of that matters because we are all Americans. My grandmother, who I never met, immigrated to this country from Hungary and she never taught her children Hungarian because she felt this was unnecessary because they were Americans.

I will close by saying that terrorism of any kind should not be tolerated. God Bless our President and God Bless America.

When will the American (and now New York) people wake up and realize what FILTH the Clintons are and actually represent?! I am appalled, disgusted and embarrassed by Hillary's actions and "emotions' during Bush's speech last night (Thursday). The only thing that she did not do was to start chewing gum! Hopefully the people of New York will see through the charade and realize that this "family" (the Clintons) are a disgrace to themselves and the American people!

Remember War Bonds during WWII - Since the government is spending $50 billion to fight the terrorists - I recommend a campaign for everyone to buy DEFENSE BONDS - what quicker way to help! If everyone just bought a $50 bond - think of how much money we could loan the government. Good Idea?

* * *

I am so proud of America and her politicians for finally coming together in this time of crises and forgetting there political beliefs, they stopped the bickering, started praying and for once I am believing in this country again.

As far as the economy goes, most people don't know what to do with their money or how to invest it. This is not the same type of stock market that had been invested in during WW I and II. Our steel industry here in Birmingham, Al has been replaced with a booming medical town. And from all that I have heard most all of the steel has started to be imported.

However, I would think that since all air traffic is suffering, that the railroad industry will be taking off. Both passenger and freight. I would think also that the truck lines will start to flourish also. I have never played the stock market game, I have never had the money to invest like I would like to. Right now may be my golden opportunity, if I only knew what would be the magic stock to invest in.

On another note, on your Wednesday broadcast you mentioned why the CIA and others in our government has been tip-toeing around the mention of Sadam Hussein. I couldn't agree with you more. And to be honest with you this scares me to death. And also, let me say that I really don't believe that Pakistan is to be trusted. These people have very little regard to Americans. And especially the women. I would know. I was raped by a Pakistinian. The one thing that I can remember of his words were, "What's the matter, you don't enjoy it?"

It is in my belief that America, that proud beautiful lady, has been brutally raped by these people. Now she is getting up and she is getting ready to fight back.

Thank you for your time.

Dawn P.

The "Mutt & Jeff" of politics are back 24/7 on CNN. Along with continuous focus on the thousand of Pakistani protesters out of over 100 million not protesting at all. Add the hundreds protesters in the U.S. ,which over 200 million are not, with we might hurt people, if we attack. What's common here? The old "fear factor" created by the DNC in conjunction with CNN/NY Times/Wash.Post and coordinated by you know who? Our friend in the DNC Bunker,James Carville. The disgraceful look from Bill's "Ice Wife" during Bush's speech. Nothing at all has changed, only the appearance has changed for the Dems. As for Bill announcing he's taking a flight on 4 different airlines, I say, security better check his zipper( as it is made of metal) as a potential weapon.

On hearing the news that we "know where he is" you gave several possibilities as to what's up. I think that the news is to "mess with his mind' is to cause him to start mistrusting those around him - is someone giving information - who can I trust - can I really trust that guy any longer?

This would drive him crazy, I think.

War on Terrorism

If we are engaged in a "war" against terrorism, then why in heavens name are the suspects arrested in this country being held in civilian jails? Why are they being hauled before Federal judges and being advised of their constitutional rights? Prisoners of war have no constitutional rights such as the right of habeus corpus. These people should be held in detention centers on military bases.

To bring these suspects into America's civilian criminal justice system is an admission that this is not really a "war." It also means that lawyers will turn any upcoming trials into a three ring circus. Instead of looking forward to a new Nuremberg trial, we're going to get the Three Stooges starring in "Osama learns from O.J." God help
us.

News Anchors

It is time that our News anchors learn that this is country is the United States of America. This is our country. Our country FLAG is Red, White and Blue. If they cannot understand that they do indeed represent our country, we need not listen or watch them. The other evening I scanned the channels and found Brit Hume wearing the Red, White and Blue. CNN, ABC, CBS were not wearing our colors. NBC was, but I think that they quit. I will only watch FOX NEWS for it is the only one that gives impartial, independent and truthful news without the prejudice spin. I hope that you, Rush, will spread the word to watch only the truth which is found on FOX.
Thanks for Listening.

Kudos, El Rushbo,

Would you PLEASE ask our Federal Government representatives to keep their mouths shut when they're being interviewed by the news media. If, as our President Bush says, "We are at a state of war," it makes no sense for the Feds to broadcast and forecast what we're doing and their unfounded opinions.

Don't our representatives understand that America's enemy terrorists are watching CNN These guys in Washington would never win in a card game... American lives are at higher stakes.

War

If our country is at war, then why are we debating over the niceties vs. the indignities. Never in the history of the world, has a war been waged, fought, and won, the way everybody thought it would be. War is never clean. War is never easy. War is not predictable,it changes from day to day .War is messy, do not expect it to be tidy in any way. And last of all, a war is not won until soldiers are standing victorious, in full occupation and control of the land of the enemy who sought to destroy them!
The U.S A made a decision not to occupy Baghdad during the Gulf War. I hope we don't make the same mistake again.Occupation may cost lives, but it removes despots and their regimes!

Lady Liberty has been called upon to disburse justice

In the past, we, as Americans, viewed our country unassailable to foreign armies. Ignorant were we to the belief that individuals, not armies, could bring mass destruction to our land of liberty and freedom. In a few short hours, millions of lives were touched and our beliefs were jerked back to reality. America has been assaulted!

News of hijacked aircraft colliding into buildings on the eastern coast spread like wildfire. The Twin Towers, as well as the Pentagon, the most impregnable structure in the world, had been struck by domestic aircraft at the hands of terrorists. Worldwide, people were dumbstruck and shocked. My own first concern, as was I am sure for the thousands of family members of those who worked in the Trade Center, was for the safety of my family. My aunt Sheila and uncle Rich both work for Morgan Stanley Dean Witter and were on the ferry crossing the Hudson when the second plane struck. After verifying that they were indeed safe, reality set in and it dawned on me that our glorious nation had been struck, not by armies, but by the vilest form of mankind.

"We must retaliate" was the response of millions. I cannot agree more. We must not only serve justice upon these terrorists, but those who harbor these anarchists. If we do not, more terrorists will arise and fill the fallen's ranks. We must feel retribution upon ALL those involved.

Americans must set aside their differences and unite. Our nation is one that is made of immigrants from diverse cultures and backgrounds. We are Caucasian Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans, Arab Americans, Jewish Americans, Christian Americans, Muslin Americans, etc. The common denominator is that we are ALL Americans. Together, we must reach inside to find a resolve made of steel. We must do what is right in honor of our fallen Americans - not only those who died as innocent victims on September 11th, but our forefather's who fought to protect this great Nation and to keep its citizens, like me and you, free. Our hearts ache for the families of the victims, and our prayers are with our leaders and members of the military. Lady Liberty has to be called upon to disburse justice. It is our job as citizens of the greatest nation in the world to stand, not as multitudes of individuals, but, as one nation to face this threat.

My hope for our nation is that we can face the future with the strength, love, and determination, that has been shown by the people of New York. For the first time in my life of 17 years, I understand the phrase "I'm proud to be an American!"

God Bless America!

Mid-East Travel Plan

I have a new Mid-East travel special that I am offering. This is open to all those that do not approve of the Presidents' current plans or future actions.

You bring your lighted candle, I will furnish a small American flag for your other hand and the 82nd Airborne will deliver you to Bin Laden's front door so you can personally deliver your message of everlasting peace and "I feel your pain"! (And it will be an artistic American flag with human artistic excrement on it! Paid for by the NEA!)

Sorry, but world peace and real civilization have a real price! (Excuse us while we take out the garbage!)Terrorist car bombers and/or tower bombers and their terrorist supporters are all the same - EVIL! My line on terrorism is drawn in the concrete and steel of the World Trade Centers - not in the dust and the sand! Those towers stood for world trade and peace. The rubble must now stand for the never-ending war on true EVIL!

Stay ever alert and safe!

I am proud to say I did not bear witness any of the liberal biased remarks by the 'esteemed' anchors of the 'major' networks. I received my fill of their brand of tele-journalism during the Presidential. election and have not regretted my choice for the briefest of moments. I watched Fox. They report the news without the liberal slant you get everywhere else, just as they did during the election. Postal Service

Rush, here's another example of how the terrorist attack is affecting our nation. In the past, the U.S. Postal Service depended greatly on using commercial flights to send Priority mail. Fortunately, only weeks before the terrorist attack, the Postal Service made an agreement with Fed Ex to fly Postal Service mail on Fed Ex flights instead of commercial flights. Now, due to the terrorist attack, the FAA has instructed the Postal Service that no mail weighing over 16 OZ. can fly on commercial flights.

Without the agreement with Fed Ex, the U.S. Postal Service would have trouble meeting it's 2-day service commitment for the delivery of Priority mail. If the agreement between Fed Ex and the Postal Service was not in affect prior to the terrorist attack, any business in the nation depending on Priority mail to conduct business could be in trouble. Fortunately, the agreement went into affect only weeks prior to the attack and the Postal Service is able to maintain service. I haven't heard anyone else talk about this and thought you might be interested.

Thanks
Tim

I would like to comment on the media's concerns over our Presidents vocabulary.

Perhaps the problem is that President Bush is a down to earth type person that 95% of the American people can understand and trust due to the fact that he does not present the public with a bunch of double talk and lies. This may be the reason the media has a hard time with his presentations. But, I assure you I like the good old boy and would be proud to stand beside him any time. Then on the other hand I'm just one of those good old boys myself.

In reference to the gentleman who called on the subject of National ID Cards--perhaps an implanted microchip would be a better option. If we can do it to our pets, why not ourselves. It should be more difficult to compromise/counterfeit a microchip than an ID card, and presumably, more difficult to lose.

Might also be easier to identify a body (at least an intact body)!

Subject: Clinton Legacy

I have been trying to make sense out of what happened to our wonderful country 11 short days ago. I had no idea you were personally exposed to the horror in DC. As I write, the tears blur the keys, my heart is broken, and I pray that your inner-strength and abiding faith, will help you somehow get through the next several days, weeks, months. It seems that everyone I talk to knew someone that was murdered by these evil, despicable bastards...the depth of this tragedy knows no bounds.

I have a philosophy that I've lived by throughout my life...when you see a wrong...right it. I know the next phrase probably isn't in the good book, but it WILL be my crusade for the rest of my life...don't get mad...get even.

Barbara's death must be avenged. I will let George W.,his great team and our military take care of destroying these bastards, but I will make it my civil duty to investigate and unearth the reasons why our country became so vulnerable in eight long years of the Clinton presidency. He sold us out to every crook and corrupt dictator around the world for his own personal gain. Never in the history of the US. has a president rented out our White House for fifty thousand dollar a night stays, or twenty five thousand dollar cup of coffees. While the traitorous acts were going on, his great buddies in the media never questioned the behavior, but admired how brilliant he was to be able to get away with it.

We as a nation found out some of the people he invited to OUR house for his campaign blood money...the Communist Chinese(who bought our nuclear deployment systems), Johnnie Chung who testified that the Chinese helped finance Clinton's second election, the wanted drug dealer who visited OUR house over seventeen times while OUR TRAITOR IN CHIEF took his filthy money, or the arms dealer who contributed over a quarter of a million dollars to Clinton at the White House...the same man who was wanted by Interpole for selling weapons of mass destruction to the Middle Eastern countries like Syria, Iran, Iraq...countries that harbor terrorists.

I've been waiting for some journalist...any journalist, to have the guts to step up to the plate and remind the American people just who is responsible for this attack and entitle the piece, "Clinton Legacy--American Blood."I'll be thinking of you and hoping we can somehow, someway, pull it together.

Love,
Candy

BOMB THEM WITH BUTTER

A military response, particularly an attack on Afghanistan, is exactly what terrorists want. It will strengthen and swell their small but fanatical ranks.

Instead, bomb Afghanistan with butter, with rice, bread, clothing and medicine. It will cost less than conventional arms, poses no threat of US casualties and just might get the populace thinking that maybe the Taliban doesn't have the answers. After three years of drought and with starvation looming, let's offer the Afghani people the vision of a new future. One that includes full stomachs.

Bomb them with information. Video players and cassettes of world leaders, particularly Islamic leaders, condemning terrorism. Carpet the country with magazines and newspapers showing the horror of terrorism committed by their "guest". Blitz them with laptop computers and DVD players filled with a perspective that is denied them by their government. Saturation bombing with hope will mean that some of it gets through. Send so much that the Taliban can't collect and hide it all.

The Taliban are telling their people to prepare for Jihad. Instead, let's give the Afghani people their first good meal in years. Seeing your family fully fed and the prospect of stability in terms of food and a future is a powerful deterrent to martyrdom. All we ask in return is that they, as a people, agree to enter the civilized world. That includes handing over terrorists in their midst.

In responding to terrorism we need to do something different... something unexpected...something that addresses the root of the problem. We need to take away the well of despair, ignorance and brutality from which the Osama bin Laden's of the world water their gardens of terror.

Loose Lips Sink Ships

CONGRESSIONAL LEAK

The two lawmakers on the Senate Intelligence panel (Oxymoron?) who leaked info to the W. Post should be named. (See The Wall Street Journal, Oct. 10, pg. 6.) It's a travesty, though not a surprise, that a newspaper editor would demonstrate better judgment regarding national security, than a politician.

How dare a member of the US Congress, elected and sworn to serve this country, leak, LEAK, what could be vital defense information to a newspaper. I am so enraged, I can hardly type. An upstanding person would release information under his own name, not leak. What on earth is the rationale for leaking information from CIA briefings? The names of leakers should somehow be leaked out. Perhaps a reward?

The best to you, Mr. Limbaugh. By your own words and works you will carry the day. As a listener, I am grateful for your voice.

Sincerely, Ruth

The Reason is Power

Everyone is missing the real point. The terrorists in Afghanistan and in Iraq are not on a holy crusade any more than Hitler and the Nazis were. Until we get off of this religion thing the people are not going to understand that it is POWER that they want. United States is standing in their way of them taking over the whole Middle East. We are in their way getting more POWER not more religion. Lets get the word straight to the people here and elsewhere. It is POWER, POWER, POWER and very little else!

Keep up the good work,

We did not abandon Afghanistan after Soviet's left.

I am sick of hearing about how all of this is our fault because we abandoned Afghanistan after the Russians left. I did a short check on the web and found out about many interesting things.

(1) Guess which country is providing most of the current food aid that the United Nations people are delivering at this time? It seems that is it the United States.
(2) Guess which country has provided most of the aid the various Afghani regimes that have been in power since the Russians left? Once again it is the United States.

Also the following facts were somewhat astonishing to me. These are direct quotes from a web site entitled Afghanistan: The Facts.

(a) The country of Afghanistan is one of the richest countries in mineral reserves, it is one of the largest natural resources treasures in the World but has never had the chance of making profit and building the country out of the money because of war.
(b) Natural resources include Oil, natural gas, nitrogen fertilizer hard coal, copper, talc, barites, sulfur, lead, zinc, iron ore, salt, and precious stones. It also has very large forest products resources.

Further information discovered at other web sites.

(1) There are over 5 trillion cubic feet of proven reserves of natural gas. In fact an international consortium was trying to build a 2+ billion dollar pipeline from Afghanistan to Russia and Eastern Europe. The project was given up on about two years ago because of unreasonable demands by the Taliban.

(2) There are 95 million barrels of proven crude oil reserves.

(3) There are 73 million tons of proven hard coal reserves.

(4) There is in excess of 160 megawatts of operating hydroelectric power in the country, plus more that is not currently on line.

(5) The country produces 400,000 cubic meters of Sawnwood, and 1000 cubic meters of particle board.

(6) One of their dams has several hundred miles of waterways navigable by ships of up to 500 tons.

In short the country could be and should be a virtual paradise except for one small problem. They have leaders that are criminally insane, who keep their people ignorant, illiterate, and out of communication with the world. Most of the people can't read and their only access to the interpretation of their religious scriptures is through the so called Clerics who preach hate, and the idea that all of their troubles are caused by the United States.

Please check this out and put it out on the air, so that the bleeding heart liberals whining about how this is all our fault can have access to the truth.

Wouldn't it be nice if our news media would stop referring to Afghanistan civilian casualties as innocent victims of American bombs. I am sorry that civilians will die in this war just as they have in all wars but the responsibility lies with the country that starts the war and continues to keep the war going. We lost over 5,000 innocent people in their cowardly attack on America including hundreds of innocent foreign lives. The responsibility for these deaths lie with the terrorist and all of the deaths to come on both sides lie with the terrorist and the countries who support them.

Every bomb, missile or bullet that is aimed at Afghanistan is because of the acts of the Taliban and the terrorist they support. The damage to their country is their direct result of their policies and they must answer for it to their countrymen and the world!.

Wouldn't it be nice if the media would give all credit for casualties to the Taliban and it's henchmen instead of blaming the messenger. It could look something like this.

WAR ON TERRORISM: The following numbers are the current casualties as a result of war started by the Taliban and it's henchmen!

Pro-American Radio Station On Air In Afghanistan
By Mike Wending
CNSNews.com London Bureau Chief
October 17, 2001

London (CNSNews.com) - As the propaganda war inside Afghanistan intensifies, a pro-American radio station is now airing broadcasts aimed towards the Afghan people. BBC Monitoring first detected the station on a previously unused shortwave frequency on Sunday night.

The station broadcasts in the two main Afghan languages, Dari and Pashto, and is heard for ten hours each day. BBC Monitoring says the station "mixes announcements read in an emotionless tone with lively Afghan music." Although the station does not identify itself on air, a BBC Monitoring spokesman said Wednesday that the station is using a shortwave frequency identified on leaflets dropped along with U.S. food aid this weekend.

The first broadcast on Sunday told listeners that "the forces of the United States are passing through your area" - a possible reference to special forces preparing to enter the country or already on the ground in Afghanistan. Subsequent broadcasts have emphasized "coalition countries" rather than the United States specifically.

The station calls the coalition "peace loving" and gives advice on how to distribute air-dropped food and avoid missiles and bombs. The station warns Afghans to stay away from roads and bridges, and to take shelter if they see U.S. troops or aircraft. "The most safe place is your own homes," one announcer said. "Don't listen to what al-Qaida and the Taliban say. If you follow these instructions no harm will come to you.

"The coalition countries want to prove to you and other Muslims in the world that the aim of this war is not to eliminate Islam, but we want bring to justice those who have shown disrespect to the name of Prophet Mohammed." The station has made specific references to the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington in an attempt to create solidarity between Afghans and Americans.

"Recently people in our country have been killed because of an act by terrorists," one broadcast said. "We know that your family have also lost their dear ones because of drought and war in the country. We share the feeling of loss." At a briefing Monday, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld acknowledged that radio transmissions had already begun into Afghanistan."We're working to make clear to the Afghan people that we support them, and we want to help free their nation from the grip of the Taliban and their foreign terrorist allies," Rumsfeld said.

Some reports before the military action began indicated that the U.S. would be dropping wind-up radios capable of receiving only one frequency on Afghanistan. But when asked if such radios were being distributed, Rumsfeld said Tuesday: "I don't think we have yet. There was talk about that, but I don't think it's happened."

Freeplay, the British company that pioneered the manufacture of a wind-up radio that uses no batteries, has reportedly received thousands of orders from aid agencies for radios destined for the region. Those radios would be capable of picking up news sources such as Voice of America and the BBC World Service along with the new information station.

Radio Free Afghanistan

Some politicians have been emphasizing the importance of the propaganda war. U.S. Rep. Ed Royce (R-Calif.) has proposed establishing "Radio Free Afghanistan" along the lines of stations Radio Free Europe, Radio Liberty and Radio Free Asia. "Horrible things are being said right now that are not being countered," Royce said last week. "There is a lot of anti-Semitic, anti-American, anti-Western hate radio being broadcast by the Taliban and Osama bin Laden's organization."

On Wednesday, Royce's press secretary said a bill creating Radio Free Afghanistan should be marked up and out of the House International Relations Committee by tomorrow afternoon, but he spoke learning that Congress would adjourn Wednesday afternoon because of an anthrax scare.

Both Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty broadcast information into Afghanistan during the Soviet invasion in the 1980s. Royce's bill would provide $14 million over two years to fund a new round of Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty broadcasts to Afghanistan. The Taliban's main propaganda tool, Voice of Shari'ah, has been off the air in Kabul since the start of U.S. attacks on Oct. 7. A Taliban radio station in the northern Balkh province continues to broadcast, however.

Radio main source of info

Radio is the main source of information in Afghanistan, where nearly 70 percent of the population is illiterate and television and the internet have been banned. The new Afghan station is thought to be broadcasting from the U.S. Air National Guard's "Commando Solo" fleet. The fleet, which has operated in Panama, Bosnia and Haiti, is comprised of six EC-130 aircraft that serve as airborne radio stations.

Broadcasters from several anti-terror coalition allies have been aiding in the fight to get independent news and information to the Afghan population. National broadcasters in Britain, France, Russia, Germany, Japan and Pakistan have stepped up their broadcasts in the Afghan languages since military action began, according to BBC Monitoring. The monitoring service records and translates information from radio, television, press, news agencies and the internet from 150 countries.\f1\fs23

Sept. 11th Positive Statistics

Some September 11th Statistics To Consider

By now everyone has been hearing the death toll rise and reports of the destruction from the terrorist attacks on the US. These were deplorable acts that we will never forget. But now is a time to look at the other side of the numbers coming out of NewYork,Washington and Pennsylvania. The sad but somewhat uplifting side that the mainstream media has not reported; yet -the SURVIVAL rates and some positive news about the attacks.

* The World Trade Center * The twin towers of the World Trade Center were places of employment for some 50,000 people. With the missing list of just over 5,000 people, that means 90% of the people targeted survived the attack. A 90% on a test is an A.

* The Pentagon * Some 23,000 people were the target of a third plane aimed at the Pentagon. The latest count shows that only 123 lost their lives. That is an amazing 99.5% survival rate. In addition, the plane seems to have come in too low, too early to affect a large portion of the building. On top of that, the section that was hit was the first of five sections to undergo renovations that would help protect the Pentagon from terrorist attacks. It had recently completed straightening and blast proofing, saving untold lives. This attack was sad, but a statistical failure.

*** The Planes ***

* American Airlines Flight 77 * This Boeing 757 that was flown into the outside of the Pentagon could have carried up to 289 people, yet only 64 were aboard. Luckily 78% of the seats were empty.

* American Airlines Flight 11 * This Boeing 767 could have had up to 351 people aboard, but only carried 92. Thankfully 74% of the seats were unfilled.

* United Airlines Flight 175 * Another Boeing 767 that could have sat 351 people only had 65 people on board. Fortunately it was 81% empty.

* United Airlines Flight 93 * This Boeing 757 was one of the most uplifting stories yet. The smallest flight to be hijacked with only 45 people aboard out of a possible 289 had 84% of its capacity unused. Yet these people stood up to the attackers and thwarted a fourth attempted destruction of a national landmark, saving untold numbers of lives in the process.

*** In Summary *** Out of potentially 74,280 Americans directly targeted by these inept cowards, 93% survived or avoided the attacks. That's a higher survival rate than heart attacks, breast cancer, kidney transplants and liver transplants -- all common, survivable illnesses.

The Hijacked planes were mostly empty, the Pentagon was hit at it's strongest point, the overwhelming majority of people in the World Trade Center buildings escaped, and a handful of passengers gave the ultimate sacrifice to save even more lives.

Pass this information on to those in fear and those in the media. Don't fear these terrorists. The odds are against them. GOD IS WITH US!

Afghan Cave Solution

Hi! Rush: I listen to you everyday down here in Dallas. My farm is about 40 miles east of George Bush's Ranch. Down here in Texas we rattle snake hunt and use a bottle of butane gas which when released into a snake hole will drive them out every time. I am a 30 year retired U.S. Army Aviation Major who flew for the 5th Special Forces Group in Vietnam. We dropped butane bombs on the underground tunnel complexes in the tri-border area. The way these bombs work is as follows: The bomb is a very large cylinder of liquid butane which is dropped very close to the tunnel entrance.

The discharge valve is opened by a special fuse which allows the butane to escape in high volumes of gas which is heavier than air which causes it to seek the very lowest levels of the bunker complex and tunnels. After about 30 minutes a delay detonator sets off the gas filled complex which will uproot and completely destroy everything in one huge explosion and fire ball. Bin Laden deserves a fiery end just as our innocent civilians got in New York. Norm

It is definitly time to re-name the ACLU..To Absurd Criteria Litigation Union The title "American Civil Liberties Union" is clearly a modern mistake.

This organization no longer represents "the US citizen" anymore. This organization now is attacking everthing basic to the USA, and seems to concentrate on diluting core principles and beliefs that founded this nation, in favor of illegals, terrorists, and hypocrites.

They want to deny the right to display the US flag , "as it might offend someone" and to prohibit freedom of expression, "as it might offend someone" and deny freedom of religious expression, such as suppressing the ten commandments, "as it might offend someone" And to deny a moment of silence in a school, "as it might offend someone"

Funny, I drive by a mosque on the way to work, should I have the ACLU modify the exterior of it, so I don't 'have to' see that it's a mosque ??

If all these someones don't like it, they are free to LEAVE, but they ARE NOT free to deprive my country and its Citizens the right to these displays, etc.

Quash these stupid ACLU hypocritical actions, Please. I submit that this decayed organization be renamed to: Absurd Criteria Litigation Union

Forewarned

Hello, I am new to the internet and never have written or called your show before. I figured I was not smart enough or witty enough to pass along anything but the more I hear out there the more I feel like digging a hole and crawling into it. I served America in Viet Nam and in the Gulf. I put 19 years in the service and it got harder and harder to take over the years and even more so as I see my brothers abused and murdered overseas in totally meaningless situations dreamed up by God knows what fool.

On the Islamic bunch. Our FBI has been monitoring them at least since the 80's and most likely before that. They knew there was a huge fundamentalist movement in our country and even where several of the key centers and leaders were. Oliver B. Revell, a former senior FBI official even said that Muslims are ultimately committed to waging holy war, both in the Middle East and the world at large, against all of their opposition, and that means us especially. He said this back in the mid90's.

Major attacks across the world by these Islamic Terrorist include Algiers where they are fighting government forces and severed heads of hundreds were found on pikes along the highways and up to 1,000 a week were being killed. Mindanao island in the Philippines which is a mostly catholic population had several bloody attacks where entire villages, men, women and children were butchered and looted all in the name of God.

Revell said in the early 90's that these are not random acts of violence, this is a war. Fundumentalist Muslims are waging a Jihad, or holy war, against secular governments across the world that in their minds threatens their basic beliefs and WILL spill over into the West. He said we were not immune to this coming storm.

October 1995, when Egyptian Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman and 9 others were covicted of conspiring to wage warfare against the United States for their parts in the 1993 bomb attack against the Trade Centers. FBI sources say one of the men, Ramzi Yousef, had plans that outlined the blowing up of 11 american airliners, possibly all in a single day (I would say that they miss understood this and that they had actually planned the taking and crashing of the airliners). Ahmed Said Nasr, an Egyptain Journalist and former diplomat from Washington, D.C., said in early 90's that not only has there been a proliferation of Islamic Fundamentalist groups in the United States, but they have carried out a major deception to the American public by masquerading as charities, religious and educational organizations. Americans are innocent and do not see these endevores for the open recruitment of followers and their training.

MAYA (Muslim Arab Youth Association) based in Plainfield, Indiana held annual conventions at which American Muslims were rallied in support of various militant Islamist causes and hit up for support both in funds and other activities. The Islamic World Fundamentalist leaders often came to these conventions (which I am not sure if they still are being held or not) not oly to address Muslim Americans but to coordinate various secret operations behind closed doors and this was reported by law-enforcement officials on more than one occasion. A Chicago-based Palestinian-American was convicted of abetting terrorist acts and admitted to the Israel authorities that he helped train HAMAS recruits at American held MAYA conventions.

The most popular lecturer at the MAYA conference held in Dec 1994 was Bassam al-Amoush, a member of the Islamic Coalition in the Jordanian Parliament. He led the crowd in cheers of "Allahu Akbar" (God is great)when he was told of the news that HAMAS had attacked a bus in Jerusalem, wounding 19 and killing 3 more. This all on our soil and well before the attacks of 9-11 and all known by our law-enforcement officials. He also declared to another meeting in Detroit 6 months earlier that "America is the number-one enemy of Islam and the Great Satan, and it was their duty to destroy this great evil." He told the crowd that it was certainly possible to defeat a morally corrupt America as the Vietamese had demonstrated. Once again, we knew all of this.

Commentator Claude Imbert wrote in the French weekly "Le Point" that Islamism now constitutes, for France, for the world, the number one menace! This after several bombings and attacks across France killed 7 and injured over 140 people in 1995. This in reply for France's aide to Algeria against terrorist attacks which had killed over 40,000 between 92 and 96. The Islamic terrorist trade mark was the beheading of victims, car bombings and throat slashings that cut the throat from the right ear to the spinal column.

Another CIA report states that the PLO trained young recruits staring at ages below 14 to become suicide bombers. They put 2-3 people in a grave, alive, and covered it as if they were dead. They were left for several minutes and then dug up. Later the "Chosen One" was again buried alive with instructions to recite Special Parts of the Koran. Then he is dug up again and isolated for 3 or more days with only the Koran and instructions from his trainers. In a few days he is reviewed by his trainers to see if he is purified and ready, if they feel he is not he is returned for a repeat of the process and if he is ready then he is given his bomb or whatever weapon he is to use, his assignment and told in great detail that "Now you are great; you are holy; you are the fire of God; your are ready to go to heaven!" Remember Islam means "I surrender" or "I submit" and a muslim is a person who submits to the will of allah or God. To a fundamentalist muslim anything or one deviating from the strict word of the Koran is morally corupt and a danger to the faith.

During the 80's thousands of militant volunteers from over 50 countries rallied to the Afghan forces fighting the Russians. Many recieved training, arms and Indocrination by the leaders of Islam and most returned home to set up fundamentalist cells in their own countries and funded and supported by the Islamic leaders based in Egypt and Afghanistan. Most arrested in the World Trade Center bombing were veterans of the Afghan campaign. The Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak said Afghan Veterans were the main terrorist threat to the stability of his government and over 20,000 Egyptians are said to have fought in Afghanistan. As you well know, most of the terrorist who were in on the World Trade Center and 9-11 attacks were also Egyptian, were they also Afghanistan veterans.

In 1996 Steven Emerson, the executive producer of a PBS documentary called Jihad in America reported in great detail the comming horror that was to break on our shores in the 9-11 attacks. How could our intelligence agencys have missed this? Personally I don't think they did and they allowed the attack to happen, though I do not know if they knew the extent of the comming damage. I beleave they wanted a reason to go after the terrorist with a nation behind them and this gave them what they wanted in spades.

Oliver B Revell reported on a huge terrorist network headquartered in New York and New Jersy which was uncovered in 1990, and even he admitted it was only a small part of the picture. All the information was there, all the data they needed to act and they had years to do so, why was nothing done?

Well doubt if you will read this, it is a bit winded and I still am looking over information I have picked up here and there. Hard to sort some of it out but there is so much of it and there were so many signs. Makes me crazy. By the way I work in the Post Office now and it really frost my cakes to think I made it through the Gulf and Nam to be killed by some jerk in my own back yard with no way to strike back.

Hope your hearing gets better, love your show, I get rode by my liberal postmaster constantly about My president and that Nut I listen to on the radio. He is one big butt kisser. Keep it up, think I would go insane totally if I thought I was the only one in the country who thought and felt like I do, ha ha, you keep me sane. "A sane man in an insane world will appear insane!"

GREYHOUND LINES, SECURITY.

DEAR RUSH:
HAVING HEARD YOU ON RADIO 11/5, I WAS ALMOST JUMPED FOR JOY TO THINK SOME
HAS TAKEN AN INTEREST IN THE "TERRORIST ATTACKS" ON THE BUS LINES.

I MIGHT ADD THERE HAVE BEEN MORE THAN 3, IN REALITY THERE HAVE BEEN 4. 1)
Manchester, TN 2) OKLAHOMA TURNPIKE, 3) Salt Lake, Ut. 4) Phoenix, AZ. There was an instant in San Luis Obispo Ca, a "person" pulled a knife on a ticket agent and a driver because of there seemed to be a type of problem with a ticket. (not on the news), Outside San Antonio, Tx. on Sat. 11/4 a passenger who was causing a problem with another passenger, attempted to hit the driver with a bottle, (not on the news. An AK-47 was found in one of public locker in Corpus Christ, TX
and another AK-47 found in the public restroom in San Antonio,TX. (also, not on the news). In PA, a collection of plastic explosive was found in one of the public lockers. (also, not on the news)

The type of people Greyhound has employed is a laughing stock, on Sat. 11/3, there was a bomb threat in Laredo, Tx. and the Customer Serv."person didn't know what to do. She ask another driver if she should send another bus behind it. He told her "for what, to watch it blow up?" Suggested she should call the FBI or some type of "officials". This is the type of people who are watching out for the passengers well being. In Laredo, which is a border town, there is no security guards, private
or otherwise.

Craig Liench, CEO of Greyhound, Dallas, Tx. claims to the drivers and very little to the public, they are making plans to tighten the security. Trust me it is a joke.

** The Real Story of Flight 93 **
The terrorists had years to plan their hijacking. The passengers had just minutes to respond. But a band of patriots came together to defy death and save a symbol of freedom. What happened on that flight--and inside the cockpit

http://www.msnbc.com/modules/exports/ct_email.asp?/news/662607.asp

Delta 15

We were about 5 hours out of Frankfurt flying over the North Atlantic and I was in my crew rest seat taking my scheduled rest break. All of a sudden the curtains parted violently and I was told to go to the cockpit, right now, to see the captain. As soon as I got there I noticed that the crew had one of those "All Business" looks on their faces. The captain handed me a printed message. I quickly read the message and realized the importance of it. The message was from Atlanta, addressed to our flight, and simply said, "All airways over the Continental US are closed. Land ASAP at the nearest airport, advise your destination."

Now, when a dispatcher tells you to land immediately without suggestingwhich airport, one can assume that the dispatcher has reluctantly given up control of the flight to the captain. We knew it was a serious situation and we needed to find terra firma quickly. It was quickly decided that the nearest airport was 400 miles away, behind our right shoulder, in Gander, on the island of New Foundland.

A quick request was made to the Canadian traffic controller and a right turn, directly to Gander, was approved immediately. We found out later why there was no hesitation by the Canadian controller approving our request.

We, the in-flight crew, were told to get the airplane ready for an immediate landing. While this was going on another message arrived from Atlanta telling us about some terrorist activity in the New York area.

We briefed the in-flight crew about going to Gander and we went about our business 'closing down' the airplane for a landing. A few minutes later I went back to the cockpit to find out that some airplanes had been hijacked and were being flown into buildings all over the US. We decided to make an announcement and LIE to the passengers for the time being. We told them
that an instrument problem had arisen on the airplane and that we needed to land at Gander, to have it checked. We promised to give more information after landing in Gander. There were many unhappy passengers but that is par for the course.

We landed in Gander about 40 minutes after the start of this episode. There were already about 20 other airplanes on the ground from all over the world. After we parked on the ramp the captain made the following announcement. "Ladies and gentlemen, you must be wondering if all these airplanes around us have the same instrument problem as we have. But the reality is that we are
here for a good reason."

Then he went on to explain the little bit we knew about the situation in the US. There were loud gasps and stares of disbelief. Local time at Gander was 12:30 pm. (11:00 AM EST)

Gander control told us to stay put. No one was allowed to get off the aircraft. No one on the ground was allowed to come near the aircrafts.Only a car from the airport police would come around once in a while, look us over and go on to the next airplane. In the next hour or so all the airways over the North Atlantic were vacated and Gander alone ended up with 53 airplanes from all over the world, out of which 27 were flying US flags.

We were told that each and every plane was to be offloaded, one at a time, with the foreign carriers given the priority. We were No.14 in the US category. We were further told that we would be given a tentative time to deplane at 6 pm. Meanwhile bits of news started to come in over the aircraft radio and for the first time we learned that airplanes were flown into the World Trade Center in New York and into the Pentagon in DC.

People were trying to use their cell phones but were unable to connect due to a different cell system in Canada. Some did get through but were only able to get to the Canadian operator who would tell them that the lines to the US were either blocked or jammed and to try again. Some time late in the evening the news filtered to us that the World Trade Center buildings had collapsed and that a fourth hijacking had resulted in a crash.

Now the passengers were totally bewildered and emotionally exhausted but stayed calm as we kept reminding them to look around to see that we were not the only ones in this predicament. There were 52 other planes with people on them in the same situation. We also told them that the Canadian Government was in charge and we were at their mercy.

True to their word, at 6 PM, Gander airport told us that our turn to deplane would come at 11 AM, the next morning. That took the last wind out of the passengers and they simply resigned and accepted this news without much noise and really started to get into a mode of spending the night on the airplane.

Gander had promised us any and all medical attention if needed; medicine, water, and lavatory servicing. And they were true to their word. Fortunately we had no medical situation during the night. We did have a young lady who was 33 weeks into her pregnancy. We took REALLY good care of her. The night passed without any further complications on our airplane despite the uncomfortable sleeping arrangements. About 10:30 on the morning of the 12th we were told to get ready to leave the aircraft.

A convoy of school buses showed up at the side of the airplane, the stairway was hooked up and the passengers were taken to the terminal for "processing" We, the crew, were taken to the same terminal but were told to go to a different section, where we were processed through Immigration and customs and then had to register with the Red Cross. After that we were isolated from our passengers and were taken in a caravan of vans to a very small hotel in the town of Gander. We had no idea where our passengers were going.

The town of Gander has a population of 10,400 people. Red Cross told us that they were going to process about 10,500 passengers from all the airplanes that were forced into Gander. We were told to just relax at the hotel and wait for a call to go back to the airport, but not to expect that call for a while. We found out the total scope of the terror back home only after getting to our hotel and turning on the TV, 24 hours after it all started.

Meanwhile we enjoyed ourselves going around town discovering things and enjoying the hospitality. The people were so friendly and they just knew that we were the "Plane people". We all had a great time until we got that call, 2 days later, on the 14th at 7AM. We made it to the airport by 8:30AM and left for Atlanta at 12:30 PM arriving in Atlanta at about 4:30PM. (Gander is 1 hour and 30 minutes ahead of EST, yes!, 1 hour and 30 minutes.)

But that's not what I wanted to tell you. What passengers told us was so uplifting and incredible and the timing couldn't have been better. We found out that Gander and the surrounding small communities, within a 75 Kilometer radius, had closed all the high schools, meeting halls, lodges,
and any other large gathering places. They converted all these facilities to a mass lodging area. Some had cots set up, some had mats with sleeping bags and pillows set up. ALL the high school students HAD to volunteer taking care of the "GUESTS".

Our 218 passengers ended up in a town called Lewisporte, about 45 Kilometers from Gander. There they were put in a high school. If any women wanted to be in a women only facility, that was arranged. Families were kept together. All the elderly passengers were given no choice and were taken to private homes. Remember that young pregnant lady, she was put up in a private home
right across the street from a 24 hour Urgent Care type facility. There were DDS on call and they had both male and female nurses available and stayed with the crowd for the duration. Phone calls and emails to US and Europe were available for every one once a day. During the days the passengers were given a choice of "Excursion" trips. Some people went on boat cruises of the lakes and harbors. Some went to see the local forests. Local bakeries stayed open to make fresh bread for the guests.

Food was prepared by all the residents and brought to the school for those who elected to stay put. Others were driven to the eatery of their choice and fed. They were given tokens to go to the local Laundromat to wash their clothes, since their luggage was still on the aircraft.

In other words every single need was met for those unfortunate travelers. Passengers were crying while telling us these stories. After all that, they were delivered to the airport right on time and without a single one missing or late. All because the local Red Cross had all the information about the goings on back at Gander and knew which group needed to leave for the airport at what time. Absolutely incredible.

When passengers came on board, it was like they had been on a cruise. Everybody knew everybody else by their name. They were swapping stories of their stay, impressing each other with who had the better time. It was mind boggling. Our flight back to Atlanta looked like a party flight. We simply stayed out of their way. The passengers had totally bonded and they were
calling each other by their first names, exchanging phone numbers, addresses, and email addresses.

And then a strange thing happened. One of our business class passengers approached me and asked if he could speak over the PA to his fellow passengers. We never, never, allow that. But something told me to get out of his way. I said "of course". The gentleman picked up the PA and
reminded everyone about what they had just gone through in the last few days. He reminded them of the hospitality they had received at the hands of total strangers. He further stated that he would like to do something in return ! for the good folks of the town of Lewisporte. He said he was going to set up a Trust Fund under the name of DELTA 15 (our flight number).

The purpose ofthe trust fund is to provide a scholarship for high school student(s) of Lewisporte to help them go to college. He asked for donations of any amount from his fellow travelers. When the paper with donations got back to us with the amounts, names, phone numbers and addresses, it totaled to $14.5K or about $20K Canadian. The gentleman who started all this turned out to be an MD from Virginia. He promised to match the donations and to start the administrative work on the scholarship. He also said that he would forward this proposal to Delta Corporate and ask
them to donate as well.

Why, all of this? Just because some people in far away places were kind to some strangers, who happened to literally drop in among them? WHY NOT?

The following note was received from one of our subscribers in Gander and I've chosen to re-print it as received; It's been a hell of a week here in Gander. The stories are amazing. We had 38 aircraft with a total of 6656 people drop by for coffee. they stayed for 3 or four days. Our population is just under 10,000, so you can imagine the logistics involved in giving each of these people a place to sleep and hot meal three times a day. Many of us spent our time bringing people home so they could get a shower or, once the rain started on the third day, driving them to the mall or sight seeing to relieve their boredom.

The diversity of the people who have been in my car and in my shower over the past few days is pretty wild. You should have seen the look on my little girl's face when three Muslim women came home with me for a shower. With their robes, she could only see their faces, hands and feet. Their hands and feet were covered with Henna Paint and two of them didn't speak English.

There was a King from the Middle East here. A British MP. The Mayor of Frankfurt Germany, etc.etc. There were also immigrants from all over the world, some of whom didn't have two pennies to rub together. They all slept side by side in schools and church halls. Except the Irish, of course! A flight from Ireland was put up at a couple of local drinking establishments! The Royal Canadian Legiona and the Elks Club.

One woman here gave a driving tour to a fellow from the US. When she brought him back to his gymnasium cot, the exchanged cards. She looked at his and said, "So you work with Best Western?" He replied, "No, I own Best Western"You should have been here, but of course, there wouldn't have been room.

What an experience!

A prayer in light' lifts survivors' love to heaven

by Peter Gelzinis - Tuesday, March 12, 2002

NEW YORK - When the twin shafts of sapphire light rose up out of the void after dusk last night, Charley Wolf thought that somewhere in their radiance his wife, Katherine, had to be smiling.

``They were beautiful, '' he said. ``Like a prayer in light.''

At the moment of illumination Charlie Wolf was circling the Statue of Liberty on a boat for family members of the 9/11 holocaust.

``Some compared the light to the phantom towers,'' he said. ``Others thought they could see their loved ones' spirits in the glow.

``As for myself, I just found them really lovely. I remember telling several folks who were near me on the boat that our loved ones had to be hanging around for this. And I bet they had a better view than we did.''

Six months after he lost his sister, Eddie Brackman prayed that the light might lead rescue workers toward some trace of the older sister he lovingly knew as Little Lucy.

It was a day when New York looked at a mangled 46,000-pound bronze sphere and saw a metaphor for its courage.

It was a night when New Yorkers viewed two ethereal towers of light and saw a lyrical reflection of their own brash resilience.

What had begun at 8:46 a.m. in the bitter cold of Battery Park culminated at twilight with a lighted prayer shining over Manhattan.

The bells of Trinity Church had tolled at 8:46 a.m. and again at 9:03 a.m., their graceful echo rising only slightly above the relentless din of car horns and sirens.

Six months after the worst attack on American soil, several hundred family members - flanked by a contingent of New York City firefighters and rescue workers still searching for victims at Ground Zero - gathered to consecrate a piece of this park with the crippled bronze sphere that had once adorned the plaza at the base of the World Trade Center.

For about an hour yesterday, Battery Park, the place where the city began almost four centuries ago, became a sacred island surrounded by an ocean of searing memory.

``The right wing of Flight 11 tore into my wife's office on the 97th floor of Tower 1,'' Charley Wolf recalled. ``Katherine, my wife, was vaporized, right there at her desk.''

As terrible as the image may be, it has provided no small amount of comfort to a man whose 40-year-old wife had only been working at Marsh & McLennan for three weeks.

``My wife did not suffer, certainly not the way all those poor people at Cantor Fitzgerald suffered,'' Charley Wolf said with a resignation that could only be described as peaceful.

``I've been left to suffer,'' he added, ``but my wife . . . no, she didn't suffer. Knowing this, being certain of it, my life begins to move on. I have to restart it.''

In one of those brief, poignant profiles in the Times, Charley celebrated his wife's unswerving sense of justice. The couple had just devoted the summer to organizing a crime watch in their Greenwich Village neighborhood. ``She was always adamant about what was right,'' he said.

They fell in love 13 years ago when Katherine came to New York on holiday from Wales. Having no children, they doted on a cocker spaniel named Louie. Just two days ago, Charley Wolf began to tenderly place his wife's clothes in boxes. As he searched for a women's shelter to donate them to, he received his regular call from the medical examiner. The ME just called to say all efforts were still being made to find a match for Katherine's DNA sample.

``I thanked him,'' Charley said with a easy smile, ``then I told him I hope I never hear from him again. Because if I did, then I'd know my image of how Katherine left this life would be different. And that just might crush me.''

On Eddy Brackman's face yesterday morning, there was no such glimpse of peace. These days, he lives to hear the medical examiner tell his family that some trace of Lucy has been found. ``She worked on the 105th floor, for AON Insurance,'' Eddy recalled. ``My sister asked her boss if she could come in late that morning on account of how it was my nephew's first day of school. But he said no. So, she went to work early so she could leave early to be home for him.''

Eddy spent three days digging for his sister last September, pausing only to crawl into the ruins of Brooks Brothers and rest his head for an hour or two. Six months later, he still looks exhausted; he still looks lost and hurt.

``The service here, it was nice,'' Eddy said, ``it was a nice thing for the families and all. But we still don't have my sister yet and they're getting close to the end over there. I'm glad people are stopping to remember. But my family needs to take our Little Lucy home.''

Two weeks ago, Allison Adams got the call that Eddy Brackman yearns for. ``They told me that they had found my Patrick after all this time,'' Allison said. ``And you know something, it almost made my pain even worse. Now, I knew it was really over. I couldn't be hoping in my heart any longer. My Patrick was really gone.''

Until that moment Allison Adams had allowed herself to find some thread of shelter in what she called ``a tiny bit of doubt.'' She was able to cling to it by playing the tape of the last phone call she received from her husband of 28 years. Patrick Adams, father of her two children, was a security guard for Fuji Bank.

``On the tape, Patrick says, `Allison, I'm trapped. I'm trapped in the bank.' Then there's a second call. I hear him saying, `Allison, I love you. I love you.'

``I don't play it too often now. But it is my memory. Yes, it was nice to see the city do this for my husband and all of the others that died. But when I need to be close to Patrick, I play that tape. And I tell him, `Patrick, I love you, too.' ''
