Character / Bush's DUI - RushOnline.com

I took the liberty of transcribing, from REAL AUDIO, Dr. Laura Schlessinger's November 3, 2000 monologue about Bush, Gore and the whole DUI thing. I've printed it below.

(From: Indy Richard)

DR. LAURA:
This is from Amy: "I was listening last week when you blasted a drunk driver, a woman who had killed her own daughter. You said you had no compassion for drunks or drunk drivers. I agree with you totally and so, was deeply shaken " -- now here's the parallel -- "to hear of George Bush's DUI arrest. He presents himself as a man of integrity. I'm really wondering if I can vote for him in light of this. Are these youthful indiscretions or signs of real character flaws? Help! --Amy in Maine."

Does this sound like Clinton White House stuff? 'Let's do this the last minute so people can't digest it, think through it and deal with it; but let's blow George Bush out of the water!'

If I were going to vote Democratic or independent, this single act by whoever, would make me vote for Bush, no matter what. Because I despise this kind of behavior. This is 25 years ago! Let me explain a couple of things, because these are character issues.

In Jewish law, it is considered one of the most egregious sins to remind someone of what they did in the past when they have owned up to it and they have changed. It is considered one of the most egregious sins! One of the most horrific things you could do to a person is constantly remind them of where they were when they're not there any more. Most of our media lives to do this; Many of YOU live to do this. I know, because I get some of your mail. But I'm here to tell you, that is a horrendous activity.

So I'm going to go over a few points, if you want to know about character. And you contrast [this] to Gore, who constantly exaggerates and obfuscates the truth as to his qualities and accomplishments and what he's been involved in and what he's done.

Last night I saw Bush have kind of an impromptu press gathering. And I remember watching him say, "that's an accurate story. And I'm not proud of that."

Does that sound like The White House? Or did we get the finger in the face?

"I often times said that years ago I made some mistakes," Bush said, "I occasionally drank too much. I did on that night. I was pulled over; I admitted to the policeman that I had been drinking. I paid a fine and I regret that it happened, but it did."

I've learned my lesson. I quit drinking alcohol in '86, and that was the right decision."

Now, I ask you, isn't owning up character? Taking responsibility at the time it happened--character? Did he get Daddy to intercede for him? NO! His own tush was filleted. Does he drink any more? No! Did anybody ever say he's an alcoholic? NO!

Now that's an important distinction, between an alcoholic and somebody who's drinking too much. They're not the same individual. And an alcoholic I would worry about, because I never know when they're going to start drinking again. I would have a problem with that.

But that's never been the diagnosis. It is character to own up to what you've done. It is character to have changed from bad behavior to good behavior. It is an egregious sin to remind people of where they were when they've changed.

It is an EVIL. And this is an evil that has been perpetrated on Bush. Whether you like all of his policies, you think he's an IQ giant, or not...whatever it is...I would hope this musters up a lot of rage against it cleverly being brought up at the last minute, when he's ahead in the polls.

I don't know: Were you in the dorm room with Gore when he was in college, to know what HE was drinking or smoking? Please! Did anybody on Bush's side pull THAT out of the hat? You want character in the White House? I think it's pretty clear. I'd go for the man who owned up and changed. That is a man I can respect and trust.... Not one who invented the Internet.
